Groj (Kevin Jamey), a French and Canadian electronic musician, has become an emerging talent on the international indie electronic music scene. He has been charted several times by Max Cooper, playlisted by James Holden and Sasha and released a generous series of remixes and EPs on labels such as Traum, Manual Music, Proton Music, and Zaubernuss. His music braids together implosive minimal with an abundance of twisted rhythmic cycles and hypnotic melodies, all the while preserving a unique sense of simple delivery and original contributions to sound design.

In search of more autonomy, Groj recently launched his own label Box Records with his debut album “Promised Land” as a first release. A swerve to the left of his past dance-floor oriented compositions – this collection of tracks explores relationships between emotional cycles, electronic music and analogue sounds with more attention given to experimentation. It has garned encouraging response by James Zabiela, Josh Wink, Max Cooper (Traum), Ricardo Tobar (Border Community), Avus (Border Community) and Applescal (Traum)

On the flip Taylor’s ‘Squeege’ takes the primitive stomp and computerized warble of the Scandinavian skweee movement – hence the throwback song title – and transports it into a more spacious tempo, fleshing out the delayed blips with knowing Boards of Canada style synth washes and arpeggiated chimes. With heavily stylised artwork, again provided by label boss Spam Chop, WF003 diversifies the sound of Wigflex, opening them up to the most experimental of dance floors whilst offering another welcome peep at the blossoming Nottingham scene”

“Metaphi’s ‘Overhill’ is an epic collision of malfunction and melody. Imagine yourself riding a robotic dragon to a swaying drumbeat, while the volcano of bass shoots fireballs all around you. Close your eyes, open your ears, and it will all become clear. Layering and delaying synths billow in the background, Pong-era vintage TV game bleeps bounce around at random, and the bass tones make like a landslide. Try to visualize the machine that could have created that dragon and the clinical clicks that resonated through the factory as it was being assembled, and you are at ‘Now Then Boris’ by The Hizatron, armed with another home-wrecking sub-bass swell on loan from Mr Oizo to contrast it’s skinny tick-tock beats and excited display of phased bleeps. Eleven Tigers’ ‘Stood Up’ is an eight-minute shuffled technoid garage crossover, which sounds like it could be the theme tune to the Russian X-files. An irresistable rushing 2-step rhythm sets the pace, YMO-esque keyboards stab, bassline bumps like colliding planets, and a reedy synth melody reminds us that the truth is out there. Finally, the man like Taylor comes with ‘Globular’. The crisp percussion and cloud like synths conjure an image of a thousand flowers blossoming in slow motion at once, while the following 4/4 kick drum stamps them right back down into the dirt. Like Lone tackling minimal click-house while stumbling backwards over Paul Hardcastle, Taylor’s off-balance tech-funk will have the dancefloor in knots”

“Kicking off the very first Wigflex ep  is the mighty Geiom with ‘Lame Car’, an intricate and restlessly inventive vintage synth and sub-bass workout, as full of energy and sparky excitement as the dusty rave tunes its opening piano stabs seem to refer to. The Berkane Sol label head has been making waves internationally over the last couple of years with a string of forward-looking releases, and ‘Lame Car’ is an impressive addition to his production CV, driven hard by a funky engine and the same sweet balance of rhythmic science and melodic infection that has characterised Kode9’s recent cuts. Maintaining these levels of depth and atmospherics is Metaphi with ‘The More I Know Her’, in which a warping robotic hook and bouncy two-step drums thread through delicately layered chimes and melodic touches en route to a burst of brass that will have even the dingiest dancefloor ready to start a carnival. This is the first release under the Metaphi flag for the skwee protagonist Metske, known for previous outings on Harmonia and Flogsta Danshall. Next up, part man / part machine Hizatron plots a darker and twisted path with ‘Schlupinski’, a rubberised techno monster built around a relentless and sinister bass synth refrain, with nerve-jangling, pulse-quickening, limb-animating bleeps, clicks, percussive ticks and taps dancing and chirruping on top of it like goblins on Bald Mountain. It’s minimal Jim, but not as we know it. The parting shot is Taylor’s eerie stomper ‘Jangle Fuss’, which keeps up the techno theme established by Hizatron but takes it into altogether more fidgety and fractured zones. Taylor used to play guitar in a prog rock band, and his love affair with delay pedals endures in a production style that can only be described as “reem”.
